Elten memorial in the Deister

The Eltendenkmal is a monument in the municipality of Wennigsen . It is in Deister , near the Waldkater settlement . The monument is a roughly 149 centimeter high machined sandstone block on a base.

The royal forester Eduard Elten was found shot dead at his location. Elten, who was known as an energetic hunter, was transferred to the Deisterforst due to the then high incidence of poaching . In an exchange of fire in 1835, Elten was shot by a poacher. His grave is in the Wennigs cemetery , where a splendid tombstone was also placed, which is still standing today.

The Jägerhof Hannover called immediately after the event to raise funds for a monument and a memorial to Elten. A prominent donor and supporter was Friedrich von Kielmansegg . The Eltendenkmal was built in 1835, as was the classicist and historicist tomb in the cemetery, in Ernst von Bandel's workshop in what was then Eisenstrasse in Hanover .
