Elyne Mitchell

Sibyl Elyne Mitchell (born December 30, 1913 in Melbourne , Victoria , Australia , † March 4, 2002 in Corryong , Victoria, Australia) was an Australian children's author.

Life

Mitchell was the daughter of the Australian General Harry Chauvel , who in the First World War , the Anzac Mounted Division during the conquest of the then to the Ottoman Empire belonging Palestine led. She received her education at St. Catherine's School in Toorak and in 1935 married the lawyer Thomas Walter Mitchell . The couple moved to the Australian Alps , the Snowy Mountains . She learned to ride and ski in the countryside. She is reportedly the first woman to ski the entire stretch of the western slopes of the Snowy Mountains as a descent. The couple had four children in the following years.

Mitchell began writing in the 1940s. Topics were primarily the nature and the history of their surroundings in the Australian Alps, but also the history of their family and the horse troops of Australia in the past wars. Her photographs found their way into various publications and also into the children's books, which she published from the 1950s with great international success. A successful series of children's books featured Snowy Brumby a palomino stallion and his descendants.
