Elysium Planitia (Elysium Region) is an extensive plain on the planet Mars . It is named after Elysium , the land of the blessed in the underworld of Greek mythology .

The center of the area is located 14.3 ° north and 213 ° west and has an extension of about 2.5 million km 2 .

To the east of the plain rise the extinct shield volcanoes Elysium Mons , Hecates Tholus and Albor Tholus . The also extinct shield volcano Apollinaris Patera is located on its southeastern edge .
