Emanuel Hoffmann-Müller
Emanuel Hoffmann-Müller (born June 24, 1643 in Basel ; † June 16, 1702 there ) was a pioneer of the silk ribbon industry in Basel.
life and work
Emanuel Hoffmann was the son of the law professor Hans Jacob Hoffmann.
He did an apprenticeship as a woolen weaver in Basel and then continued his education in Holland . From there he smuggled a loom to Basel around 1667 , with which one could weave several silk ribbons at the same time. As the spokesman for the silk ribbon manufacturers, in a battle with the traditional weavers after 1670, he obtained approval for these more powerful looms. This enabled the Basel tape industry to secure a market advantage over other production centers, as the so-called tape mills were banned in the German Reich and elsewhere.
The company founded by Emanuel Hoffmann-Müller existed until 1883.
