Emanuel Steiner
Emanuel Steiner (born April 1, 1778 in Winterthur ; † October 15, 1831 there ) was a Swiss painter and etcher .
biography
Emanuel Steiner was born in Winterthur in 1778 as the son of Rittmeister and Grand Councilor Emanuel and Maria Ursula Steiner. He was a student of Johann Rudolph Schellenberg in Winterthur and from 1795 in Dresden a student of Winterthur Anton Graff and Adrian Zingg . On June 27, 1801, he and Graff's son Carl Anton went on a study trip to Switzerland, Naples and Rome , where he stayed at the Villa Malta in 1801 . He was also in Paris . In 1804 he worked again in his hometown.
When he was in Zurich in 1805, he probably met Carl Wilhelm Kolbe the Elder in the company of Salomon Gessner . He was instructed in etching by Georg Christoph Friedrich Oberkogler in Zurich .
In 1809 he married Verena Elisabetha Sulzer, daughter of the painter Jakob Sulzer. His son David Eduard Steiner (1811–1860) also worked as a painter.
