David Eduard Steiner
David Eduard Steiner (born April 7, 1811 in Winterthur ; † April 5, 1860 there ) was a Swiss portrait and history painter , etcher and lithographer .
biography
David Eduard Steiner received his first painting lessons from his father, the painter and etcher Emanuel Steiner . He then studied from May 17, 1829 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich . In 1836 he married Susanna Kleophea Goldschmid. He returned to Winterthur in 1837.
Steiner started out as a portrait painter and from 1840 dealt with history and landscape painting . He learned the art of etching and lithography from Georg Christoph Friedrich Oberkogler (1774–1856) in Zurich.
He created u. a. 1856 for the city library in Winterthur the picture Ulrich Zwingli , who shakes hands with Martin Luther as a sign of brotherly love . Steiner designed festival decorations for officers, gymnastics and rifle festivals. Together with the painter Ludwig Vogel , Johann Konrad Zeller and Hans Jakob Oeri , he designed the festival hut in 1851 for the 500th anniversary of Zurich's accession to the Swiss Confederation.
His works are in the collections of the Zurich Central Library and the Winterthur Art Museum .
