Life

Emanuel Voss was the son of a Hamburg school principal. After graduating from high school, he started an apprenticeship with an import-export company. After studying at the Sondershausen Conservatory , he began his stage career as Kapellmeister at the local theater. He then worked as a lyric tenor in Strasbourg. Engagements as a hero tenor in Aachen, Rostock, Magdeburg, Regensburg and Stettin followed, where he was a member of the city theater from 1906 to 1911. In Rostock he was a member of the Masonic lodge To the three stars .

Voss was particularly successful as a Wagner singer and not only made guest appearances on numerous large stages, but also organized, for example, opera guest performances in Greifswald with his own staff from Stettin from 1907. Thanks to his initiative and financial support, the new building of the city theater in Greifswald , which was inaugurated on October 10, 1915 and from then on was headed by him as director (appointed director in 1923). Almost the entire opera repertoire was performed here, such as B. Works by Wagner , Puccini , Janáček and Bartók . According to his testimony and according to reviews, Kapellmeister Erich Peter played a key role in the success of the Greifswald opera and concert performances from 1923 to 1929 .

From 1936 to 1942, Voss took early retirement for political reasons and moved to Hamburg. He ran the theater again from 1943 to 1949.

Emanuel Voss was married to the opera singer Maria Sorelli-Voss, b. Sobotka (born January 31, 1879).
