Emek Cinema (Istanbul)

The Emek Cinema , Turkish: Emek Sineması , was a cinema on Yeşilçam Sokak (Green Fir Street) in Istanbul 's Beyoğlu district on the European side of the city of Istanbul.

Construction and usage history

The theater and later cinema hall was part of one of the most prominent buildings on İstiklal Caddesi , the Serkildoryan built in 1882, or Cercle d'Orient. The building in the style of historicism , the work of French architect Alexandre Vallaury was in those days mainly by non-Turks inhabited Beyoğlu, then still traditionally Galata called Here the multinational elite met the Ottoman Empire, bankers, ambassadors, high government officials in 'Büyük Kulüp '(' Grand Club ') or in the Club des Chasseurs de Constantinople (Club of the Hunters of Constantinople ). In 1924 the hall became a cinema under the name Melek Sineması . The house, later renamed Emek Cinema, and the surrounding cinemas on Yeşilçam Street became the epitome of Turkish cinema. Events of the International Istanbul Film Festival , the international film festival of Istanbul, took place here for more than 23 years until 2010 .

The cinema was most recently owned by the state social security, which in turn leased it to a private investor. It was destroyed at the end of May 2013.

Fate of the cinema

At the end of 2011, a court order made it possible to demolish the cinema, which is to be replaced by a shopping center. The demolition began in early 2013.

Thousands of people protested against this development in Istanbul, including famous actors such as Rutkay Aziz and Tarık Akan , the actress and television great Meltem Cumbul and the film director Semih Kaplanoğlu .

Demolishing the Jugendstilden monument would give UNESCO an opportunity to remove Istanbul from the list of world cultural heritage . Since 2004, the organization has been criticizing the lack of legal structures in the city with which the cultural heritage can be effectively protected.
