Emesopsis is a genus of tropical bedbugs (Heteroptera) from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae). At least 22 species have been described, one of which, Emesopsis nubilus , also occurs in southern Europe. A German name for the genus or the individual species is not in use.

Features and way of life

The representatives of this genus have a length of a few millimeters to about one centimeter. Like the bugs of the subfamily Emesinae in general, they move on their hind and middle legs, while the front extremities function as catching and grasping legs. With them the prey is held, then pierced with the mouthparts and carried away. The prey is then sucked out, which can take half an hour. Various insects serve as food, e.g. B. beetles , bugs , two-winged birds and springtails .

Habitat and Distribution

The species in the genus Emesopsis are found in both agrarian and forest ecosystems.

Originally they only occur in tropical Asia (especially India, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan, New Guinea) and Australia (e.g. E. bunda in Queensland), where by far the greatest abundance of species can be found today. Only the species Emesopsis nubilus is found worldwide in warm to hot regions (e.g. also Spain, Florida, Hawaii), which is presumably a result of passive displacement through world trade.
