founding

The namesake of the institute, Emil Frank, was the head of the Jewish community in Wittlich for many years. The institute that bears his name was founded in 1997 on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Reinhold Bohlen at the University of Trier and the Trier Theological Faculty in cooperation with the city of Wittlich. Bohlen, who was honorary director of the institute from 1997 to June 2013, was replaced in 2013 by the theologian Hans-Georg Gradl , who held the office until May 31, 2018. The theologian Erasmus Gaß has been director of the institute since June 1, 2018 . The institute's logo shows the front view of the former synagogue in Wittlich.

Purpose of the institute

The Emil Frank Institute is a meeting place for Jews and non-Jews who are interested in research, teaching and further education as well as promoting the nature and history of Judaism on a national and international level. The aims of the institute include a. active participation in the dialogue between Christians and Jews in order to make the inner relationships between the religions more aware. In particular, contacts to Jewish representatives, institutions and educational establishments at home and abroad should be established. Another research area of ​​the institute is the recording of the history of the Jewish communities and their settlements in the area of ​​the Moselle , Eifel and Hunsrück . The institute, which cooperates with the Wittlich city library, has a constantly expanding library and media library on a scientific basis with the possibility of lending and a collection that currently amounts to over 11,000 media units. The institute also offers events, conferences, seminars, language courses, readings and excursions in order to impart knowledge about the Jewish religion, its history and culture as well as the state of Israel and the Middle East issues .
