Emil-Jozef De Smedt

Emil-Jozef De Smedt (born October 30, 1909 in Opwijk , Belgium , † October 1, 1995 in Bruges ) was Bishop of Bruges and rector of the seminary in Mechelen .

Life

De Smedt is the oldest child of the brewer and mayor of Opwijk, Joseph De Smedt (1875–1968). After attending the humanistic high school, he studied at the seminary of Mechelen and at the Gregoriana in Rome. In 1933 he was ordained a priest. He was promoted to Dr. phil. and in 1938 Dr. theol. PhD . From 1945 to 1950 he was rector of the St. Joseph Seminary in Mechelen, of which he became president in 1945. He was ordained bishop on June 29, 1950 and was auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels from 1950 to 1952, and from 1952 to 1984 bishop of Bruges. De Smedt was appointed to the Unity Secretariat in 1960 . He took part in the Second Vatican Council and was a member of the sub-commission on religious freedom. His language skills and speaking skills helped him with this task. He was very influential in the division of the Catholic University of Leuven from 1962 to 1968.
