Emil Gratzl

Emil Gratzl (born December 30, 1877 in Munich ; † January 9, 1957 ) was a German librarian and orientalist.

Life

Gratzl attended the Luitpold-Gymnasium in Munich before studying Classical Philology and Semitic Languages ​​in Munich and Marburg . In 1899 he passed his state examination and began as a trainee at the Bavarian State Library . Here he stayed his entire professional life, interrupted only by a year at the University Library of Würzburg . In 1906 he received his doctorate. In 1921 he became senior librarian, then in 1929 first director and in 1936 deputy general director. In 1921 Gratzl turned down the invitation to take over the UB Breslau, and he also turned down an offer to become general director of the Bavarian State Library. Gratzl's main field of activity was acquisition, and he also wrote the corresponding chapter in the "Handbuch der Bibliothekswissenschaft". His specialty were oriental manuscripts and book covers.
