Emil Haefely

Emil Haefely (born May 22, 1866 in Mümliswil ; † February 28, 1939 in Basel ) was a Swiss manufacturer of electrical insulation technology.

His parents were the small farmer Leonz Haefely and Elisabeth, geb. Mixer. From 1880 to 1896 he worked in the Mümliswil comb factory, then was a draftsman at Von Roll in Klus ( Balsthal ). In 1887 he married Philomena Saner, the daughter of Josef Saner. From 1896 to 1900 he was a workshop assistant in the electricity company Alioth AG of Ludwig Rudolf Alioth in Münchenstein . From 1902 he was involved in setting up an insulation department at Brown, Boveri & Cie. and Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon .

In 1904 Haefely founded his company Emil Haefely & Cie in the Neue Welt district of Munichstein . for electrical insulation technology. He introduced hard paper as an insulating material. In 1907 the company was relocated to Basel. In 1908 he married Mathilde Meyer, the daughter of Johann Meyer. Their son James Emil Haefely was born on March 21, 1909. In 1912 he developed a method for isolating high-voltage machines and began building high-voltage test systems.

With his wife as commercial manager, he brought the company to the stock exchange in 1914 as Emil Haefely & Cie AG (today: Haefely Test AG ). In 1922 they founded a subsidiary in France with a plant in Saint-Louis. In 1922 the Technical University of Darmstadt awarded him the honorary Dr. Ing. From 1923 to 1926 Haefely was the liberal Grand Councilor of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
