from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Hauptmann (born May 26, 1940 in Königinhof ; † January 18, 2012 in Regensburg ) was a Czech artist and author of several well-known Czech cartoons for children, a. a. about the cat Modroočka. He was also very successful as a puppeteer and marionette carver in the Czech Republic.

Life

Emil Hauptmann graduated from the art school in industrial Uherské Hradiště from 1965 to 1969 . Following the tradition of his grandfather, a puppeteer and woodcarver in northern Bohemia in the 19th and 20th centuries, he also engaged in Czech puppetry . After completing his training, he worked as an artist and author of several animated films and series for children from 1969, including with the director Garik Seko and the artist Hermína Týrlová. The children's series with stories from the life of the cat Modroočky (Schnurr the cat with blue eyes, translated into German by Otfried Preussler) was well known. He was the author and artistic designer of a ten-part animation series about "Malá čarodějnice" or known in Germany as "The Little Witch" for television. On August 18, 1974, he and friends improvised a puppet theater in front of passers-by in public, with critical allusions to the earlier communist regimes and the Soviet occupation from someone. The puppeteers were persecuted by the police, arrested and convicted in a very harsh Kromeriz district court for alleged sedition. Even if the allusions did not come from Emil, as the owner of the puppet theater he took the blame on himself. In addition to Emil Hauptmann, who received the highest sentence - two and a half years imprisonment, Lenka Fialová also received 18 months in the first rehabilitation group. Because of this arrest, he can only be found on very few of his works. After being banned from practicing his profession, he worked in the city's sewers for 8 years. In 1982 he asked to be allowed to emigrate to the Federal Republic of Germany, which was granted to him. He then continued his artistic work in Germany.

Emil Hauptmann worked with Hermina Týrlová. He artistically participated in many animated films (mostly anonymously). To name just one film: Me and my dvojnožec and I am a white-bearded Zrzunda. After 1990 he was rehabilitated in the Czech Republic.
