Emil Honegger (born April 29, 1892 in Bergamo ; † December 2, 1983 in Zurich ) was a Swiss mechanical engineer .

Life

Emil Honegger was born on April 29, 1892 as the son of Kaspar Honegger and Berta, née Egli, in Bergamo. From 1911 to 1915 he studied mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich , which he completed with a doctorate in 1919 . From 1920 to 1931 he was head of the materials testing laboratory at the BBC . In addition, he worked from 1923 to 1931 as a private lecturer in materials testing, from 1931 to 1934 as associate professor and from 1934 to 1964 as full professor at the newly created chair for textile engineering and textile industry at the ETH Zurich. In these functions, Honegger gained international renown with fundamental work on new measuring processes and calculation methods in textile material technology as well as the mechanics of ring spinning technology and the dynamics of the loom . Honegger was the first non-English person to be appointed Vice President of the British Textile Institute.

Emil Honegger, who was married to Ida, the daughter of the politician Albert Locher , died on December 2, 1983 at the age of 91 in Zurich.
