Emil Reiniger

Emil Karl Ernst Reiniger (* 1792 in Großenhain ; † 1849 there ) was a German doctor and poet . Together with Karl Preusker, he founded the first public library in Germany, the Vaterländische Bürger-Bibliothek, in Hayn, Saxony, in 1828 .

Life

Reiniger, the son of a pharmacist, practiced as a respected doctor in Grossenhain. He was equally active politically and socially in his hometown. He supported the goals of the bourgeois democratic movement , was committed to education and co-founded several Großenhainer associations. Emil Reiniger shared the idea of ​​"lifelong learning" with the rent manager Karl Preusker. Together they developed the project for a public school library. After it was founded, however, after a short period of participation, Reiniger devoted himself to building up a music club.

He also processed his political thoughts into poetic texts and poems. For example in the Reiterlied , a patriotic poem, which was set to music by the composer Carl Maria von Weber after Reiniger's request in 1825 as a song for male voices. For the folk poem The Battle of Lützen on November 6th, 1632 , published in 1832 , Emil Reiniger was honored with a gold medal by the King of Sweden at the time .
