Emil Roth (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Roth (born October 26, 1893 in Bari ; † August 28, 1980 in Zurich ) was a Swiss architect .

Life

Emil Roth was a cousin of Alfred Roth , with whom he later worked. Born in Bari, he moved back to Switzerland with his family when he was a child, where he spent part of his school days at Lake Constance and from 1911 studied at the ETH Zurich . After he was called up for active service, he fell seriously ill with a lung disease and had to give up his career plans for the time being. After working as an assistant in various construction trades, he became an intern in an architectural office in Basel in 1922 .

Roth was one of the founders of ABC magazine in 1924 with Mart Stam and was its first editorial assistant. This activity made him known internationally. He worked on El Lissitzky's “Wolkenbügel” and also took part in the project for the Werkbundsiedlung Neubühl in Zurich (1928/32). Other projects Emil Roth collaborated on were the children's home in Mösli, the Doldertal apartment buildings (1935/36) and the youth hostel in Rohrbruck in Fällanden (1937). In 1938 he planned the children's home on the Wildboden near Davos , which aroused Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's admiration. In 1939, Emil Roth, again seriously ill, retired from professional life. His son Urs Beat Roth was born in 1946. He also completed an architectural training.

The youth hostel planned by Roth quickly turned out to be too small and offered its visitors little comfort. Only in the 1970s was there hot water for the showers and a fire in the apartment part in 1981 led to a reconstruction with improved comfort.
