Emil Schmid (born July 27, 1912 in St. Pölten - Pottenbrunn ; † April 26, 1994 in Kirchstetten , Lower Austria) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Life

After completing his studies, Emil Schmid first worked as a primary and secondary school teacher in Pottenbrunn and Traisen . The first portraits and landscapes were created very early on. At the beginning of the war he was trained as a meteorologist for the German Air Force. Nevertheless he occupied himself intensively with his painting during the war. After deployments at various air bases in the Soviet Union, he was taken prisoner of war in 1945, but was able to escape from a Soviet POW camp.

From 1945 Emil Schmid lived with his family of seven as a freelance artist in Vienna. He taught life drawing and designed fabric samples.

The 1946–1948 private study with Robin Christian Andersen brought initial success: like Ludwig Merwart , Emil Schmid was already one of the participants in the exhibition "Young Art in Vienna" in the Künstlerhaus Wien in 1948 .

1951 Resumption of his school activity as a mathematics teacher and art teacher at various Austrian secondary schools and later also grammar schools. 1952–1957 studied painting and art education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Robin Christian Andersen and Herbert Boeckl .

Emil Schmid emerged as a still life painter and graphic artist, particularly in the post-war period and in the early 1960s. After severe eye diseases (thrombosis) he had to limit his work as a visual artist for many years. Emil Schmid died in Kirchstetten in 1994 three months after a successful eye operation .
