Emil Steger (born June 19, 1858 in Vienna , Austrian Empire ; died January 3, 1929 in Inzersdorf near Vienna ) was an Austrian opera and concert singer with a baritone voice.

Life

Emil Steger began studying law and then switched to singing, for which he was trained in Vienna and Italy. Steger had his first engagement at the Graz Opera House , after which he sang at the Zurich City Theater in 1881/82 , then at the Wiesbaden Court Theater and in 1886/87 at the Basel City Theater . Steger continued his career in the USA at the Thalia Theater in New York and sang Telramund in Lohengrin at the Metropolitan Opera in 1887/88 .

From 1889 to 1892 Steger was engaged at the Brno Theater and then in Cologne and Halle an der Saale . He returned to Vienna and toured Europe with recitals until 1914. Steger also worked as a singing teacher, among the students were Hans Duhan and Herbert Thöny .

His brother Heinrich Steger (1854-1929) was a successful criminal defense attorney in Vienna.
