Emil Zimmermann (born January 24, 1933 in Pirmasens ; † August 28, 2019 ) was a German ethnomedicist.

Life

He spent childhood in his hometown. From 1952 he studied physics, mathematics and chemistry at the University of Heidelberg . In addition, he developed a growing interest in psychology, through which he eventually came into contact with anthropology and sociology. After completing his intermediate diploma , Zimmermann changed his main subjects and began studying at the Institute for Sociology and Ethnology in Heidelberg in 1959/1960. His minor subjects were clinical psychology and psychiatry. Wilhelm Emil Mühlmann was his teacher at the newly founded Institute for Sociology and Ethnology . He not only attended courses from Mühlmann, Ernst Topitsch and Ernst Wilhelm Müller , but eventually became Mühlmann's assistant.

In addition, Zimmermann took part in a field research trip to Sicily in 1963 , during which he dealt with various topics, namely migration and the cultural dimension of disease and health. Through his studies and experience in Sicily, Zimmermann began to focus on the relationship between culture and medicine, an approach that eventually led to the academic field of Medical Anthropology. In 1972 Zimmermann completed his studies. He started work in a psychiatric clinic and began teaching at the Institute for Sociology and Ethnology in Heidelberg. In addition, he carried out further field research (e.g. in Turkey and Iran) and began teaching in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1976 .

In 1980 Zimmermann accepted a position at the Institute for Medical Sociology in Freiburg. He not only lectured, but also worked on transcultural medical teams. He also worked in the children's clinic (Freiburg), where he set up an ethnomedical advice center. He retired in 1999.
