Emilie Sofia Högquist

Emilie Sofia Högquist , called Aspasia (born April 29, 1812 in Stockholm , † December 18, 1846 in Turin ) was a Swedish actress and mistress of King Oskar I of Sweden .

Life

Emilie Sofia was the only daughter of Anders Högquist, Chamberlain of Count Carl De Geer, and his wife Anna Beata Hedvall, as well as the younger sister of the famous Swedish actor Jean Högquist.

Högquist trained at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm, made her debut in early 1828 and stayed with the ensemble until 1831 . She was the most celebrated prima donna of her time and was called the Swedish Aspasia . No other actress from Sweden, except perhaps Jeanette Fredrique Löf (1760–1813), King Gustav III's favorite actress . , had such high popularity and success before .

With the British diplomat John Bloomfield she had a daughter named Thekla (born October 15, 1833). Later she made the acquaintance of the then Crown Prince and later King Oskar I of Sweden . He rented a luxury apartment in Stockholm for Emilie Sofia and made her his mistress. The liaison had two sons: Hjalmar Högquist, Prince of Lapland (1839–1874) and Max Högquist, Prince of Lapland (1840–1872).

Emilie Sofia Högquist died in Turin, where she was taking a cure for her tuberculosis .
