Emma Dench

Emma Dench (* 1963 in York ) is an English ancient historian .

Life

She grew up near Stratford-upon-Avon . Her father was Jeffery Dench, a Shakespearean actor, and her mother Betty was a speech therapist. Her paternal aunt is Judi Dench , an award-winning film actress. Emma appeared in the 1968 film version of A Midsummer Night's Dream as Peaseblossom alongside her aunt, who played Titania.

Dench studied Classics at Wadham College (BA Hons Literae Humaniores 1987) and at St Hugh's College , Oxford ( DPhil in Ancient History 1993). Before joining the Classics and History departments at Harvard in January 2007, she taught Classics and Ancient History at Birkbeck College, University of London (1992–2006). She was a Craven Fellow at the University of Oxford (1989–1991), Rome Scholar (1991–1992) and Hugh Last Fellow (1996) at the British School at Rome , Cotton Fellow (1997–1998), a member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2002–2003) and visiting professor of Classics and History at Harvard (2005–2006) and Fellow of the Loeb Classical Library Foundation (2011–2012). She gave the Gray Lectures at the University of Cambridge in May 2016 .

She is a UK citizen and has a United States Permanent Resident Card . She is married to the artist Jonathan Bowker. They have a son together, Jacob.
