Emmanuel Erskine

Emmanuel Alexander Erskine (born January 19, 1937 in Kumasi , Ashanti Region ) is a retired Ghanaian lieutenant general who was involved in many UN operations in Ghana.

Military training

Erskine was trained in telecommunications at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, UK. He stayed at Staff College in Camberley until 1968 and was educated at the Royal College of Defense Studies between 1968 and 1972 .

Military career

As Director General in the Ministry of Defense , Erskine was responsible for operations and planning between 1971 and 1972. Between 1973 and 1974 he was in command of the Ghanaian army and commanding officer of the Ghanaian telecommunications regiment. In the Ministry of Defense he was Director of Communications.

In particular, as Chief of Staff at UNTSO , Erskine has worked in Israel and was even appointed to office for the second time. Erskine was the first in command of the UNIFIL force in Lebanon .

In addition to his long-standing peace missions, Erskine acted as an advisor to the former OAU and is now an advisor to ECOWAS .

On September 7, 2001, Erskine opened the library named after him at the Center for Peace Missions in Africa , of which he is chairman. It has since been called The General Emmanuel Erskine Research and Documentation Center for Peace and Security (GERDC) . Since May 2002 he has been a member of the National Reconciliation Commission , which in October 2004 issued a multi-volume report on the human rights situation in the country since independence.

politics

Erskine is chairman of the People's Heritage Party (PHP) in Ghana and as such participated in the 1992 presidential elections in Ghana . He was one of several candidates here and competed against the future President Rawlings , among others . Erskine received 1.7 percent of the vote and was clearly defeated by the other candidates.
