Emmanuel Rival (born February 15, 1971 in Nantes ) is a former French football player and later coach .

Player career

Rival was trained at the Center technique national Fernand-Sastre , also known as INF Clairefontaine. In 1991 he signed his first professional contract with the first division club SM Caen , where he first came to occasional missions, which increased in the subsequent period partly due to bans and injuries. As a result, he had fought for a regular place when Caen was relegated to the second division in 1995; a year later, Rival achieved direct promotion with the team and also secured the only title of his career with the second division championship.

After the club was relegated again in 1998, the player found a new employer in the second division ES Troyes AC . With Troyes he was promoted to the top French league in 1999; a year later, his contract was not renewed despite relegation and reasonable performance. In view of this, he moved back to the second division to Olympique Nîmes , where he played on the side of Franck Rizzetto in defensive midfield. When the club relegated to the third division in 2002, Rival decided at the age of 31 after 137 first division games with two goals and 147 second division games with four goals to end his professional career.

Coaching career

The ex-professional returned to his former station SM Caen in 2003 to work for the club as a youth coach, but only stayed for a year. From 2005 to 2006 he coached the lower class FC Perpignan ; then he was hired by AS Cannes as a youth coach. He stayed in this post until he was appointed coach of the Cannes reserve team in October 2012; he was released from this office in November of the same year.
