En defensa propia ( In Self-Defense ) is a Mexican  silent film by the director  Joaquín Coss from 1917, which can be assigned to the genre drama . It is one of the earliestfilms producedby Azteca Films , the script was written by Mimí Derba , who also worked on the production and as an actress. The film tells of a relationship drama in which a woman who has returned from Europe wants to force herself into an intact marriage. The story, like most of the Mexican films of the period,is probablyinspired by European films.

action

The recently orphaned Enriqueta now has to work to make a living. She finds employment with the widower Julio Mancera for whom she works as governess for his little daughter. After a while, the two fall in love and get married. But then Julio Manvera's cousin, Eva, returns from Europe and tries to break the harmonious couple apart. She is almost successful when her plans are thwarted at a party she throws for Julio and his friends. There she is caught by Julio, Enriqueta and the other guests in a compromising situation with Julio's best friend, Mauricio.

background

The story told in En defensa propia was not a particularly unusual one for Mexican cinema at the time. Many films dealt with such relationship dramas, and it is also likely that it was an adaptation of a European film. Many of the Mexican films of this time were based primarily on Italian films, which had reached one of its high points at the time. En defensa propia was described by the newspaper El Pueblo as “the first artistically and nationally filmed film”. According to this newspaper, the film was also commercially successful. The sources are not good, however, and El Pueblo's assessments of other films tended to be in opposition to popular opinion.

Mimí Derba wrote another film for Azteca films after En defensa propia . La soñadora ( The Dreamer ) was also filmed in 1917.
