Encyclopaedia Judaica

The Encyclopaedia Judaica is an encyclopedia on the history and culture of Judaism in German and English.

German-language "Encyclopaedia Judaica" (1928–1934)

The first Encyclopaedia Judaica was published in Berlin in 1928 by Nahum Goldmann's Eschkol publishing house . The editors were Jakob Klatzkin and Ismar Elbogen . Their publication had to be stopped after 10 of 15 German-language (A – Lyra) volumes as a result of the transfer of power to the National Socialists . 40,000 copies that had already been printed were destroyed in Leipzig in 1933. Two Hebrew volumes (A – Antipas) were published under the name Eshkol (אשכול).

English-language "Encyclopaedia Judaica" (1971–1972)

In 1971/1972 an English-language Encyclopaedia Judaica was published in sixteen volumes in Jerusalem by the publishing house Keter and in New York by Macmillan. From 1973 to 1991, eight “year books” (1973, 1974, 1975–76, 1977–78, 1983–85, 1986–87, 1988–89, and 1990–91) and two “Decennial” volumes (1973–191) were published. 82; 1983-92).

English-language "Encyclopaedia Judaica" 2nd edition (2007)

In 2007 an expanded second edition was published in 22 volumes.
