Encyclopedia Lituanica

The Encyclopedia Lituanica (probably named after the Encyclopedia Britannica or the Encyclopedia Americana ) is a six-volume encyclopedia in English with more than 3,600 pages that describes Lithuania and topics related to Lithuania. It was published in Boston , Massachusetts in 1970–1978 by Lithuanian emigrants who left Lithuania after the end of World War II . To date, there is no comparable comprehensive work on Lithuania in English.

The encyclopedia was published by the same people who had previously worked out the Lietuvių enciklopedija , a 35-volume general encyclopedia in Lithuanian, from 1953 to 1966. Later 2 volumes with supplements and supplements were added to this, the 37th and last volume appeared in 1985. The company was particularly difficult by the fact that the majority of the sources and reference works were inaccessible to the authors behind the Iron Curtain in the Soviet Union .

Many of the entries in the Encyclopedia Lituanica are based on the older entries in the Lietuvių enciklopedija , about two fifths of which were devoted to subjects related to Lithuania. The majority of the articles were therefore first written in Lithuanian and only then translated into English. However, the translations are considered to be of good quality by reviewers.

The encyclopedia appeared in the Lithuanian Encyclopedia Press , which was founded by and owned by Juozas Kapočius. In 1995 Kapočius was awarded the Order of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas for his services . Editor of the Encyclopedia Lituanica was Simas Sužiedėlis; the last volume lists 197 authors, almost exclusively Lithuanians.
