Lietuvių enciklopedija

Lietuvių enciklopedija (also: LE , or Bostono enciklopedija ) is a 37-volume Lithuanian general encyclopedia on Lithuania and topics related to Lithuania.

history

The predecessor of the Bostono enciklopedija was the " Lietuviškoji enciklopedija ", the first volume of which was published from 1931 to 1933 by the Spaudos fondas publishing house . The editor was Vaclovas Biržiška . By 1944, 10 volumes up to the letter J had appeared.

From 1953 to 1966 Lithuanian emigrants put the work in Boston ( Massachusetts continued). The 35 volumes up to 1966 were followed by two additional volumes with additions and supplements in 1969 and 1987. The director and owner of the publishing house "Lietuvių enciklopedija" was Juozas Kapočius , who combined over 80 editors, employees and helpers to form the editorial team.

After completing the Lithuanian encyclopedia, work began on the English-language Encyclopedia Lituanica .
