Endel Loide

Endel Loide ( pseudonym for Endel Rätsep ; born November 29 . Jul / 12 December 1900 greg. In Rõuge , Livonia , †  1976 ) was an Estonian writer and journalist.

life and work

Endel Loide came from what is now southern Estonia. He was arrested as a youth during the First World War in 1915 and had to live in exile in Russia . The tsarist authorities accused him and his friends (including the later writer Juhan Jaik ) of being a member of a secret organization of Estonian nationalist youth.

After his return to the Baltic States , Loide took part in the Estonian War of Independence (1918-20) against Soviet Russia . In June 1920 he was awarded the Freedom Cross for his services .

Under his author's name Endel Loide he wrote for the well-known newspapers Päevaleht and Postimees , including as a theater critic. He later officially adopted the surname Loide.

Loide's best-known works are, along with a few short stories, three dramas that appeared in 1929/30. Today he is forgotten as a writer.

In the 1930s Loide was an avowed supporter of the neo-pagan Taarausk movement, which saw itself as patriotic-Estonian in its rejection of Christianity.

After the Soviet occupation of Estonia, he withdrew from the public.

Endel Loide also wrote the screenplay for the film Öösel . The silent film premiered in 1931. He is considered lost .
