history

The Castel Sant'Angelo is said to have served as a hospital as early as 1125 under the name "Elendsherberge" or "Elendsburg", although this is controversial today. It is said to have been donated by a priest named Erkenknecht. However, it has been scientifically proven that the “stone house” is the oldest preserved house of its kind in Germany.

In 1383 the property "Castel Sant'Angelo" was first mentioned. Around 1400 Johann von Allenblumen built a house, which he gives the name "Zur Engelsburg". His coat of arms still adorns the oldest preserved gate in Erfurt. Georg Sturz bought the property in 1515. He was one of the richest citizens of Erfurt and from 1516 to 1526 rector of the university. Sturz is considered a patron of the Erfurt humanists and an advisor to Adam Ries .

Around 1515 the philosophers and humanists Crotus Rubianus and Ulrich von Hutten wrote their well-known dark man letters here in the “haze” of Castel Sant'Angelo - the greatest satire of German literature - and set an immortal memorial to Erfurt humanism. In 1516 the Second Mutian Circle met regularly under the patronage of Sturz and the chairmanship of Eobanus Hessus in the - no longer existing - "humanist dungeon" of the Castel Sant'Angelo. It developed into the most important testimony of Erfurt's high humanism. In 1519 the humanists gained significant influence through the study reform of Justus Jonas - it broke the predominance of scholasticism at the University of Erfurt. Justus Jonas, Euricius Cordus and Crotus Rubianus left the University of Erfurt in 1521 because of constant attacks by the early church party - a substantial bloodletting for the humanist group. There was a student revolt in Erfurt and the division of the humanist group into the parties Johannes Lang and Eobanus Hessus. In 1526 Hessus left the University of Erfurt and the fate of the humanists in Erfurt was fulfilled.

Martin Luther received medical care from Georg Sturz in 1537 and looked after in the Castel Sant'Angelo.

The bell founder Eckart Kuchen acquired the “Black Horse” in 1595 - the former “Humanist Bay” was also located in this building. The Belgian merchant Levinus van Wynendael bought several pieces of land on the Castel Sant'Angelo in 1763 and in 1767 he set up a tobacco shop with one of the first tobacco mills in Germany.

In 1776 the merchant Ernst Gottlob Hoffmann, who had moved from Arnstadt, took over the Belgian tobacco business and in 1788 merged with his partner Friedrich Triebel to form the company "Hoffmann & Triebel", which soon became known throughout Germany. In the following years the area of the tobacco factory enlarged so much that the entire structural stock of the Castel Sant'Angelo was included. The tobacco factory was closed in 1936. At the same time, the property advisory board of the city of Erfurt determined that all the buildings in Castel Sant'Angelo are in poor condition, but should be preserved due to their cultural and historical significance for the city. In 1937 the city of Erfurt bought the property. The idea of creating a historic restaurant here was never realized. Through the war years with bomb damage and the subsequent neglect, the structural condition of the buildings deteriorated more and more.

In 1952 the actual house "Zur Engelsburg" on Allerheiligenstrasse was torn down. Only the outer wall of the first floor and the entrance gate to the courtyard have been preserved. With the house, the famous plank parlor , in which the dark man's letters were written , also disappeared - so the restored plank parlor in the “Haus zum Schwarzen Ross” in the Castel Sant'Angelo is not this place.

In 1956 it was considered to use the remaining buildings of the Castel Sant'Angelo as the seat of the rector of the Medical Academy in Erfurt . Eight years later, the clearing out by medical students, the structural security and restoration of the complex (without the actual house "Zur Engelsburg"). A contract on the use of the humanist facility was signed in 1965 between the City Council of Erfurt and the Medical Academy. The medieval cellar and the upper floors were converted into student club rooms in 1968, the half-timbering was exposed. In total, the students did 6426 hours of voluntary work. On March 4, 1968, the “ Engelsburg Student Club” was opened by Günther Panzram , Vice-Rector for Student Affairs .

In 1990 the “Engelsburg Student Club” became a registered association. The Medical Academy / Medical University of Erfurt, until then the sponsor of the Engelsburg Student Club, was wound up in 1993. In 1994 the “Förderverein Humanistenstätte Engelsburg e. V. ", 2005 the" Förderverein Engelsburg - the ALTE (N) e. V. “founded.

From 1997 to 2000 extensive renovations and the almost complete restoration of the Castel Sant'Angelo building ensemble were carried out with the exception of the plank room in the humanist bay. The association is called “Studentenzentrum Engelsburg e. V. “and continued the further development of the house into a cultural center and contact point for many young people. The ISIZ (Internationales StudienInformationsZentrum) and dormitories for students were built in the “Scheune” adjoining room. In December 2000 the restaurant "Steinhaus" was opened.

General

The Engelsburg student center is located in the heart of Erfurt's old town and has been operated as a student-organized cultural center since 1968. The name “Castel Sant'Angelo” is also the historical name of the ensemble of buildings in the old university quarter. According to its statutes, the registered association Student Center Engelsburg has the main task of presenting cultural offers for students and young people in the Thuringian state capital.

What began in 1968 with a large number of voluntary hours has developed into professional cultural and gastronomic work. After the Medical Academy Erfurt, which until then had been the sponsor of the “Engelsburg Student Club”, was wound up at the beginning of the 1990s, the resulting association continued to develop the house into a cultural center and a focal point for many young people.

In addition to the event-oriented core areas of the event cellar and Café DuckDich, the “Steinhaus” restaurant opened after the complete renovation was completed in 2000.

In the “Scheune” adjoining room, six dormitory spaces of the Erfurt-Ilmenau Student Union and the ISIZ (International Study Information Center) were set up. The social counseling of the Studentenwerk has also been located in the Castel Sant'Angelo since October 2004.

structure

The business operations with a permanent workforce are responsible for the operation of the Engelsburg Student Center and the implementation of the concepts developed by the association. This structure is supported by young people who earn money here on a mini-job alongside their studies, as well as by club members.

The Engelsburg Student Center is not institutionally funded, only individual activities are supported by partners on a project basis. The income from gastronomy is used to finance the statutory purposes of culture and education. Ten young people are currently being trained in various professions in Castel Sant'Angelo.

Partners and projects

Thuringia Student Union / Thuringia Student Union

In December 2000, an International Study Information Center, or ISIZ for short, opened in the “Scheune” adjoining room on the grounds of Castel Sant'Angelo, giving students and high school graduates in the city the opportunity to get advice on topics such as BAföG, study abroad and internships. This project, developed by the Engelsburg Student Center, was conceived and put into practice by interns from Erfurt universities within two years. On December 14, 2000, a comprehensive cooperation agreement was signed between the Erfurt-Ilmenau Student Union (later Thuringia Student Union, then Thuringia Student Union), the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, the University of Erfurt, the employment office and the student center. Social counseling by the Studierendenwerk is also located in the Castel Sant'Angelo. This gives you the opportunity to get comprehensive advice outside of the universities.

University of Erfurt and University of Applied Sciences Erfurt

Traditionally, there is a close cooperation with both universities in the state capital not only at the student level. Offers from the student center such as student union parties and regular student get-togethers are just as much part of the cooperation as the organization of cultural highlights at the universities through Castel Sant'Angelo. The summer festivals with up to 4,000 guests, the university balls and the university street party deserve special mention. Since April 2003 the Erfurt universities, the Studentenwerk Erfurt-Ilmenau and the Studentenzentrum Engelsburg e. V. jointly offered project "Café International" was launched in June 2004 by the Thuringian Minister for Research, Science and Art, Prof. Schipanski was awarded 2nd prize in the "Studying together in Thuringia" competition.

Event areas

Event basement

Concerts, discos and party evenings as well as cabaret and theater performances are part of the cultural repertoire in the event cellar of the Castel Sant'Angelo. The cultural selection in the largest contiguous event area of the house changes monthly and is not only aimed at students, but also for those interested in culture in general. A cellar of this time with barrel and cross vaults and wooden beam ceilings is used for gastronomy purposes.

Café Duck You

Café DuckDich offers space for all kinds of events, including closed ones. Visible half-timbering runs through all rooms. A structural feature is the unusual ceiling height of the lecture room. The low height of the beam construction in the café itself gave it its name.

Stone house with beer garden

The stone house is the youngest gastronomic area in Castel Sant'Angelo. It opened in December 2000. In the guest rooms you can see historical walls and a beam dated to around 1125. There is a beer garden in the courtyard during the summer months.
