action

A seventeen-year-old girl named Lucinda Price (or Luce) is sent to Sword & Cross boarding school after being accused of killing a boy in a fire. Luce meets a variety of people there, including Arriane and Penn (the late gardener's daughter), whom she befriends, and two boys, Daniel and Cam. Daniel is an enigmatic, rude, but beautiful boy that Luce is attracted to; while Cam is kind to her.

Cam and Luce go on a date outside the school grounds. But when they enter a bar, they run into aggressive drunk men. Cam defeats them with ease and reveals his superhuman strength. Shortly thereafter, Daniel speaks to Luce and explains what is going on. Most of the people in the boarding school are fallen angels; Gabbe (a beautiful girl who turns out to be the angel Gabriel), Arriane and Annabelle (who originally introduced herself as Arriane's sister) are all on God's side; while Cam, Roland (a black angel known for smuggling), and Molly (a pierced Goth girl) are under the influence of the devil. Daniel has yet to choose a side. It turns out that Daniel is cursed for loving Luce. If he gets too close emotionally to her, she will go up in flames and die before her eighteenth birthday. In this life, however, she stayed alive even though he revealed this to her and they kissed. It then turns out that Luce was not baptized in this life. If she dies, she will not be able to be reborn.

A fight ensues between the angels and the boarding school's librarian, Miss Sophia, leads Luce and Penn (the only human ones) away from this fight. Once safe, she reveals that she belongs to a brutal sect interested in overturning the balance between good and evil by getting Daniel to choose a side. She kills Penn with a knife and tries to do the same to Luce. However, she is stopped in time by Daniel, Arriane and Gabbe. The fight is over, but without a winner. Daniel informs Luce that she needs to be brought to safety and entrusts her to Mr. Cole, one of the teachers who knows about the fallen angels. Luce is taken away on a plane after kissing Daniel one last time, who promised her that they would meet again soon.
