Engelsstaub is a German dark wave formation from Kassel .

history

The band was originally founded in 1992 as a solo project by Mark Hofmann, who was previously a member of the band Les Fleurs Du Mal .

The name of the band is derived from the English word angeldust , which is a slang term for the designer drug phencyclidine . On the band's homepage, however, the members distance themselves from the allegations of drug glorification.

Rather, the band follows an esoteric approach with the name, which is particularly reflected in the album 'anderswelt'. "

The first release - still as a solo project - was the single "Unholy" in the year it was founded. In the following year 1993 the debut album "Malleus Maleficarum" was released. Hofmann's sister Silke and the native Pole Waldemar Janusz Zaremba complemented the project into a trio, which still exists in this form to this day. With the songs Kissed by God , Fallen Angel and Victim of Love , Engelsstaub achieved some club hits in Gothic culture.

Like some other bands in the genre (e.g. Love Is Colder Than Death ), Angel Dust evolved into a far less somber musical direction over time. While guitars, cold rhythms and (spoken) chants dominated the debut album “Malleus Maleficarum”, the latest studio album “Anderswelt” featured many elements from neoclassicism and neo-folk , comparable to Dead Can Dance .

With the album "nachtwärts", Engelsstaub are releasing a studio album for the first time in twelve years.
