Blues in the Closet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blues in the Closet (aka "Collard Greens And Black-Eye Peas") is a jazz composition by Oscar Pettiford from 1953, which is sometimes also attributed to Harry Babasin .

Blues in the Closet is a riffartig built Blue theme in moderate pace and conventional swing melody. The reef sounds six times in only a slightly different form. According to Hans-Jürgen Schaal , it is reminiscent of "various phrases from compositions and solos by Dexter Gordon , Charlie Parker and Lester Young ."

The piece is considered one of the most famous compositions by Oscar Pettiford; it was first recorded in 1953 by a quintet with two cellos (Pettiford and Babasin), piano, bass and drums.

It developed into a frequently played jazz standard on the Jazz at the Philharmonic tours, where it was played by Stan Getz and Jay Jay Johnson around 1957 , but also in the German post-war jazz scene ( Peter Herbolzheimer , Hans Koller ). Blues in the Closet has also been recorded by Chet Baker , Jaki Byard , Kenny Drew , Tal Farlow , Red Garland , Duke Jordan , Howard McGhee / Teddy Edwards , Horace Parlan , Bud Powell , Toots Thielemans and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson .
