engineerING Card

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The engineerING card was a voluntary professional ID for engineers . Qualifications, relevant professional experience and further training as well as any association membership of the cardholder were documented on this professional ID. This data was saved in a database . The password-protected database was only accessible to the holder of the engineerING card. There he could view, download or print out his personal register excerpt and present it to a potential employer. This extract from the register was based on the European curriculum vitae. The engineerING card should thus create standards that are comparable across Europe and thereby improve the cross-border deployment of engineers. In addition, it should support the progress of the Bologna Process beyond university education and thus contribute to the transparency of applications at home and abroad and thereby facilitate the selection process for both applicants and companies. On December 1st, 2019 the engineerING card database and the website www.engineeringcard.de were switched off.

history

In 2005 the European Union set itself the goal of promoting occupational mobility within the member states in Directive 2005/36 / EC . The VDI is of the opinion that a uniform recognition procedure for the professional qualifications of engineers should be introduced across Europe. The European engineering association FEANI gave the approval to develop a European professional ID for engineers in Germany. Against this background, the VDI developed the engineerING card and presented it to the public for the first time at the 2010 Hanover Fair. In October 2010, FEANI recognized the engineerING card, which has already been introduced in eight other countries in addition to Germany. The VDI is currently calling for the engineerING card to be implemented across Europe.

Supporting associations

The engineerING card is currently supported by the following sponsoring associations:

Application for the engineerING card

Anyone who has successfully completed an engineering course at a state-recognized German university could apply for the engineerING card. The professional card is not tied to membership in a sponsoring association.

To apply for the eningeerING card, the following documents were required in digital form:

These documents were then checked by a registry commission. The commission is composed of experts from university and business representatives in the field of engineering. The registry commission decided on the award of the engineerING card on the basis of nationally and internationally recognized quality standards.

costs

The testing costs for meeting the minimum requirements were € 95 for members and € 120 for non-members of the sponsoring associations and were incurred regardless of the outcome of the testing process. If the cardholder's curriculum vitae was updated, this resulted in costs of € 20 for non-members of the sponsoring associations. This process was free of charge for members of the sponsoring associations. Only changing personal and address data was possible at any time free of charge.

functionality

The documents submitted were entered on the front and back of the card according to a classification:

Class a Degrees
Class A1 Dipl.-Ing. (FH) or B. Eng. and B. Sc.
Class A2 Dipl.-Ing. (TU / TH) or M.Eng. and M.Sc.
Class A3 Dr.-Ing.
class B work experience
Class B1 Companies
Class B2 public service
Class B3 Self-employed
Class C further education
Class C1 Seminar with certificate of attendance
Class C2 Seminar with final exam
Class C3 Further training with certificate

On the front of the card, the cardholder's entire qualification was shown in abbreviated form in the form of the classes; e.g.

A1A2 B1 C1C2C3

The cardholder was also able to view and print out all registration data as a register extract and present it to a potential employer. This extract from the register was based on the European curriculum vitae.

criticism

The engineerING card was criticized by IG Metall . From the perspective of IG-Metall, it must be ensured that the engineerING card is not taken into account when selecting applicants.

The main points of criticism of IG Metall are above all:

  • no benefit from purchasing the card for employees.
  • The costs would be disproportionate to the benefits of the card.
  • The map divides the training into simple grids, which may have far-reaching effects on the labor market and education policy. From the point of view of IG-Metall, the step to professional accreditation based on the Anglo-Saxon model is not far off in the event of a nationwide introduction. In the Anglo-Saxon world, a university degree is no longer sufficient to be allowed to call yourself an engineer; Here one has to show qualifications and professional experience, which would invalidate the university degree.
  • The education sector would be further privatized by this card, since the associations supporting the card are only private organizations.
  • The central filing of sensitive information in a central engineering register also results in an aspect of data protection law.

The alternatives mentioned are improvements in the quality of studies and teaching as well as study conditions in engineering subjects.
