The Anglo-Japanese Friendship Treaty ( Japanese 日 英 和 親 条約 , Nichi-Ei Washin Joyaku ) was signed on October 4, 1854 as the first limited friendship treaty between Great Britain and Japan . It was signed in Nagasaki by the Australian Governor Admiral Sir James Stirling and the Governors of Nagasaki ( Nagasaki bugyō ) as representatives of the Tokugawa Shogunate ( Bakufu ).

The contract came about as a result of the opening of Japan forced by the US commodore Matthew Perry and secured by contract with the Kanagawa Convention . Russia also signed a similar treaty with the Shimoda Treaty.
