English Masters 1979

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The English Masters 1979 in badminton took place in mid-September 1979 at the Royal Albert Hall in London . It was the first badminton tournament in which prize money was distributed. However, the prize money was relatively modest compared to tennis. Prakash Padukone and Lene Køppeneach received £ 3,000 victory bonus, but could not accept this because they did not yet have the status of a licensed player at that time. Only licensed players were allowed to accept such funds during this time, but were excluded from purely amateur events such as the Commonwealth Games or the Asian Games. In such cases, the money went to the starter's badminton association. Nonetheless, this tournament ushered in the era of Open Badminton . As a result, several Masters tournaments were launched such as the Scandinavian Masters , the Indian Masters and the Malaysian Masters .
