The English River is an approximately 75 km long tributary of Lake Melville in the south of the Labrador Peninsula in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The English River has its origins in a nameless lake at 470  m high on the eastern edge of the Mealy Mountains . The North River runs further south . The English River flows along the eastern flank of the mountain range in a predominantly north-northwest direction. On the upper reaches it crosses several lakes. The English River flows through Lake Mishta-nipi between river kilometers 48 and 45 . This is also fed by an unnamed tributary that drains several lakes centrally located in the Mealy Mountains. Below the lake are the Pastien Rapids on the river. In the middle course, the English River has several river widenings with rapids in between. Below the Long Steady , a 10.5 km long river widening with a slight gradient, the English River falls about 120 m over a distance of 11 km to Lake Melville. There are numerous rapids along this stretch of the river, including the Marks Rapids . 5 km above the mouth, a larger nameless tributary, which bears the name Lochan River in the upper reaches , meets the English River from the left. The mouth of the English River lies on the eastern south bank of Lake Melville, 43 km southwest of Rigolet . The catchment area of the English River covers 640 km². This includes the northeastern part of the Mealy Mountains. Except for the lower three kilometers of the river, the course of the river is within the Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy-Mountains National Park .

Fish fauna

At river kilometer 1.6 there is a 6.1 m high vertical waterfall that prevents fish from migrating upstream. Below this waterfall are Atlantic salmon , brook trout , Catostomus catostomus (longnose sucker) and Prosopium cylindraceum (round whitefish).
