Enguerrand de Monstrelet (* around 1390 in Montrelet ; † July 20, 1453 ) was a French chronicler . He is the author of the Chroniques de Monstrelet , which was written for the House of Luxemburg-Ligny and records events from 1400 to 1444.

Enguerrand des Monstrelet came from the Picardy nobility and, according to contemporary sources , was Jean de Luxembourg's stable master in the Abbeville region . In 1430, in the service of Duke Philip the Good , he took part in the Burgundian negotiations with Joan of Arc . In 1436 he became a tax collector in Cambrai (he was responsible for the "Gavenne", a local tax levied by the Count of Flanders as patron of the Bishop of Cambrai ). In 1444 he became Vogt of Cambrai, the following year Bailli of Walincourt .

As a chronicler, he is seen as the successor to Jean Froissart . Mathieu d'Escouchy , another chronicler, reports that he stopped his notes in 1444. In keeping with the custom of the time, his chronicle was extended to the year 1516 by other works. Monstrelet himself died in 1453.

The Chroniques de Monstrelet side with the Burgundians, at the time one of the two parties in the struggle for power in France. His report is about the Hundred Years War that was unfolding before his eyes. Monstrelet is not known for his literary style, his partisanship is clear, even if he asserts his neutrality. Nevertheless, he is one of the essential sources for his time; his chronicles are valuable due to the presumably authentic documents and the statements they contain.

Monstrelet's bones were found in the Chapelle des Récollets in Cambrai in 1959 and reburied near the church portal in 1962.
