The Engure Lake (also Angernsee ; Latvian : Engures ezers ) is a lake on the west coast of the Riga Bay in western Latvia . It is the third largest lake in Latvia.
The shallow lagoon lake is separated from the sea by a 1.5 to 2.5 km wide dune . The rivers Dzedrupe, Dursupe and Jurģupe flow into the lake. The outflow is via the Mērsrags Canal (Latvian: Mērsraga kanāls), the construction of which in 1842 lowered the water level of the lake by 1.5 meters. The subsoil under a layer of digested sludge up to 6 meters deep is sandy with dolomite rocks . The shores of the lake are heavily overgrown, so that the actual water surface can only be seen from a few places. The reeds are cut and used economically. The islands of the lake cover a total area of 85 hectares.
Nature reserve
There are 16 species of fish in the lake. The lake has an important function as a breeding area for sometimes rare bird species. Several wooden towers and a laboratory for bird watchers have been built on the bank . Although the lake is part of a nature reserve, you can fish in some places. It is also possible to rent boats.
