Enhanced Real Time Ethernet Controller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Isochronous) Enhanced Real Time Ethernet Controller , ERTEC for short , is a microprocessor ( ASIC ) based on an ARM946ES core or ARM926 core (ERTEC200P ) with an integrated Ethernet switch for isochronous real-time communication via Profinet from Siemens and Renesas Electronics , formerly NEC .

The microprocessor is used in most Profinet devices from Siemens. Other companies can also purchase the processor to equip their device with Profinet. The data transfer via Profinet IO is carried out entirely by the ERTEC hardware . The resources of the integrated ARM core are thus available for other applications, for example for controlling or operating simple field devices .

As with Profibus , ERTEC technology is openly marketed.

In January 2006 ERTEC received an "Editors' Choice Award" in the "Networks and Communication" category from Control Engineering magazine .
