Enipeus (mythology)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enipeus ( Greek  Ἐνιπεύς ) is a river god of Greek mythology , a son of Oceanus and Tethys and the secret love of Tire .

Tyro was married to King Cretheus of Iolkos , with whom they had their sons Aison , Pheres and Amythaon . However, she loved Enipeus. She tried to seduce him; Enipeus, however, resisted their advances. One day Poseidon , who in turn was inflamed with passion for Tire, approached her in the form of Enipeus and did with the deceived Tire that which Enipeus was decently unable to do. The twins Neleus and Pelias came from this connection .

The Enipeus River, named after him, is located in Thessaly , where it was to become a key factor in the Battle of Pharsalus .
