Pheres (son of Cretheus)
Pheres ( ancient Greek Φέρης ) was in Greek mythology one of the sons of Tire with King Kretheus of Iolkos . His brothers were Aison and Amythaon .
After the death of Kreutheus, his half-brother Pelias , son of Tyro with Poseidon , tried to usurp the rule over all of Thessaly , lured the rightful successor Aison into a cave below Iolkos and banished Pheres as well as his own twin brother Neleus to Messenia , where he was both settled in Pylos (see also Nestor's palace ) with their mother's cousin, King Aphareus . Later Pheres founded the city of Pherai in Thessaly, named after him, and ruled as its king.
Pheres had the following children with his wife Periclymene:
- Admetus , who was later to woo Alcestis , the daughter of Pelias
- Lykurgos, king of Nemea
- Eidomene , wife of Amythaon
- Periopis, mother of Patroclus from Menoitius
- Eriopis , wife of Oileus
- Antigone
- Antianeira , wife of Abas and of Apollon mother of Idmon
