Enric Santeugini i Montsalvatge , Spanish Enrique Santeugini y Montsalvaje , internationally also as Henry Santeugini, Enrico Santeugini , (born December 8, 1894 in Manresa , † February 25, 1978 in Terrassa ) was a Catalan pop composer and saxophone virtuoso. Many of his compositions are influenced by dance-oriented Spanish and Catalan folklore music such as Sardana and Pasodoble .

life and work

Enric Santeuigini settled in Germany , where he worked in Berlin in the early 1930s . Here he developed into one of the leading entertainment musicians of the late Weimar years. His best-known hit in the German-speaking cultural area. My dear darling, are you from Spain? published and interpreted in 1931 the Comedian Harmonists on the Electrola label . The lyricist of this hit was Fritz Rotter .

Another international successful title by Santeugini was the love story-telling Pasodoble Adios Madrecita (original text by Icilio Sterbini ), which with the German text Für dich, Rio Rita by Oscar H. Adam pays homage to the famous Berlin dance bar of the same name on Tauentzienstrasse . This work was played in all the major dance salons of the Berlin scene at the time. The scores have been copied many times and included in their repertoire by the best dance orchestras. Different language versions were created. The emerging radio and record industry spread the piece beyond Central Europe to Scandinavia, the Baltic States, France, England and from there to the USA. The recording of this title by the Marek Weber Orchestra from 1932 found widespread use from 1937 in what was then the Soviet Union, and the title is still a popular repertoire piece, especially in Russia. The song inspired other songs in Russia that told of Santeugini's Pasodoble. The Russian director and screenwriter Pyotr Efimovich Todorovsky made the film Riorita in 2008 .

After the seizure of power of the Nazis Santeugini first moved to Sweden on. He later returned to Catalonia. He started a new musical project in the Danubio Azul club in Barcelona and tried to build on his successes in Germany. But his project was not financially successful. Santeguini's remaining debts forced him to take a modest position as an instrumental musician in the Barcelona Red Cross brass band. The dance music that made him internationally known was not noticed in his home country, or not appreciated. Santeugini's songs were and are played and sung in many countries. The artist personality Santeugini was increasingly obscured by his hits.

Santeugini was in the tradition of the jazz and swing pioneers of Barcelona. He contributed to the development of the pasodoble and the spread of this dance culture throughout Europe. In his later phase he devoted himself to the composition of Sardanas.
