Enrique Arancibia Clavel

Enrique Arancibia (born October 13, 1944 , † April 28, 2011 ) was a Chilean employee of the DINA secret service who was responsible for the murder of General Carlos Prats and his wife in 1974 on behalf of Augusto Pinochet . General Prats, was vice-president of the Salvador Allende government and later a staunch opponent of the 1973 Pinochet coup.

Life

Even if it could not be directly proven to him, Arancibia was repeatedly associated with the right-wing extremist group that murdered the chief of staff René Schneider . Schneider was loyal to the democratically elected Salvador Allende and advocated an apolitical military. After Schneider's murder, Arancibia went into exile in Buenos Aires , Argentina . A fascist military dictatorship ruled there and Arancibia acted as a liaison officer between the DINA secret service and the Argentine secret police. Since Pinochet's coup, Prats had been living in exile in Argentina. The Prat assassination was part of the so-called Operation Condor , an operation aimed at killing opposition members. At that time, the operational area covered almost all of Latin America. Arancibia was assisted in the murder by CIA agent Michael Townley . In addition, the Italian right-wing terrorist and secret service agent Stefano Delle Chiaie is said to have been involved. He later testified against Townley and Arancibia. The contact between the Italian and the Chilean is also confirmed by documents from the FBI .

In 1978, shortly after Michael Townley returned to the United States, Arancibia was arrested by Argentine security forces and charged with espionage. He was eventually sentenced to life imprisonment in Argentina for the murder of Prats. Townley was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 1976 murder of Orlando Letelier in Washington, DC , of which he served only 62 months. He never had to answer for the Prats murder. Arancibia was also convicted of kidnapping Laura Elgueta in Argentina in 2004. In 2007 he was released for technical reasons after almost 20 years in prison. In April 2011 he was killed in an assassination attempt.
