Enrique David Borja Garcia (born December 30, 1945 ) is a retired Mexican soccer player and successful goalscorer. During his active career he was exclusively under contract with the two most popular clubs in Mexico City : first with the UNAM Pumas and then with Club America . Today he is the UANL Tigres club president .

Career

Borja began his playing career with the UNAM Pumas and felt so comfortable there that he actually never wanted to work for another club. But then the wealthy Club América wanted him badly and agreed with UNAM about his move. Borja did not want to accept this, so there was a labor court proceeding. This ended with the judgment that Borja had to comply with the change. Borja became an icon at Club America and in the early 1970s he was the top scorer in the Mexican League three times in a row, scoring a total of 70 times within three years: in 1970/71 he scored 24 goals, in 1971/72 even 26 and also in 1972 / In 73 he was the most successful goalscorer in his country with 20 goals.

Borja has appeared in more than 60 international matches for Mexico and scored more than 30 goals. In his international debut on May 11, 1966 against the national team of Chile , he scored the winning goal to make it 1-0 in the fourth minute of the game. The just only 20-year-old Borja was also one of the big stars of the Mexicans in the in England discharged 1966 World Cup . Together with his colleague Aarón Padilla , who was also under contract with UNAM at the time, he formed the strike duo of Mexicans who only scored one goal in the group games and had to return home after the preliminary round without a win. The only World Cup goal was achieved by Borja in the game against France (1-1), in which the Mexican television commentator Fernando Marcos , himself a former player and coach, must have gone through all the ups and downs: “Borja, don't fail. Don't fail! Goal for Mexico. "

At the 1970 World Cup , which was held in his own country four years later , Borja, who was now under contract with America and was to become top scorer in each of the next three seasons, was not one of the outstanding players. He was missing in the opening game against the Soviet Union , only played one half against El Salvador , was missing again against Belgium and was only substituted on in the quarter-finals against Italy in the 69th minute. So he only played 66 minutes in which he didn't score a single goal.
