Enrique Daniel Hormazábal Silva (born January 6, 1931 in Santiago ; † April 18, 1999 ibid) was a Chilean football player and later coach. Active for Colo-Colo Santiago most of the time at club level , he also made 42 international matches for the national team of his home country .
Career
Enrique Hormazábal was born on January 6, 1931 in the Chilean capital Santiago. At the CD Santiago Morning , Hormazábal began playing football and in 1948, at the age of 17, was accepted into the club's first team, which at that time was one of the top teams in the Primera División , Chile's top division in football. With the master from 1942 Enrique Hormazábal was under contract from 1948 to 1955, but could not celebrate a title win. Instead, the young attacker descended with his team in Chile's second division, whereupon he left the club.
Enrique Hormazábal moved to the current Chilean record champions CSD Colo-Colo in the 1956 season. The striker spent eight successful years here and the rest of his career. Already in his first season at Colo-Colo he won the Chilean football championship. In the Primera División, the team took first place with a lead of five points over the Santiago Wanderers . Two years later they secured the first ever played Copa Chile , the Chilean cup competition , against CD Universidad Católica . Enrique Hormazábal celebrated his second championship with Colo-Colo in the 1960 season when they finished first in the first Chilean league with a lead of three points again over the Santiago Wanderers. After the championship had to be surrendered for two years in a row, Hormazábal managed his third championship with Colo-Colo in 1963. This time, after the end of all game days, they ranked first in the Primera División with one point ahead of Universidad de Chile . After this third championship, Enrique Hormazábal turned his back on active football, he ended his career at the age of 32. Before that, he played for Colo-Colo in 178 championship games. He scored 85 goals, which means an average of almost 0.5 hits per game. Seven years after the end of his career, Enrique Hormazábal returned to Colo-Colo and took over the coaching position at his long-term employer. However, this activity was characterized by very little success and Hormazábal was replaced by Luis Álamos for the 1972 season , who should lead the club not only to the Chilean championship, but also as the first club in the country to reach the final of the Copa Libertadores .
Between 1950 and 1963 Enrique Hormazábal completed 42 international matches for the Chilean national football team. He scored 17 goals, which still gives him a place among the top ten most successful goal scorers in the national team of Chile. However, what was probably the best Chilean attacker of the 1950s was denied participation in a soccer world championship . While Chile did not qualify for the 1954 and 1958 tournaments, the 31-year-old Hormazábal was no longer considered by national coach Fernando Riera for the 1962 soccer World Cup in his own country .
