Enrique Urquijo

Enrique Urquijo Prieto (born February 15, 1960 in Madrid , † November 17, 1999 there ) was a Spanish singer , composer and guitarist .

In the late 1970s, together with José Enrique Cano (known as Canito) and his brothers Javier and Álvaro, he founded the band Tos , which after Canito's death in 1980 - the memorial concert in his honor is considered the beginning of the Movida madrileña cultural movement - as Los Secretos was founded and still exists today. In addition, from 1992 he appeared in different line-ups, including various members of Los Secretos, with his parallel band Los Problemas . Among the numerous records that he released with the three bands is Adiós tristeza (Los Secretos, 1991), which was named one of the 50 best rock albums in Spanish rock by the Spanish edition of Rolling Stone in 2009. The compilation Grandes Éxitos (Los Secretos, 1996) has sold over 300,000 times.

Urquijo had a daughter named María, Almudena Navarro Barrio, who was born in 1994. From 1996 until his death he was in a relationship with Pía Minchot.

Addicted to heroin since the early 1980s - he made his first withdrawal attempt in 1983 - he died of an overdose in 1999. He was found lifeless in a doorway in Madrid's Malasaña neighborhood on November 17th . He addressed drug addiction in the songs Buena Chica and Agárrate a mí María , which he dedicated to his daughter. He rests in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid.

On the occasion of his death, the album A tu lado was recorded, in which well-known Urquijos songs are played by numerous musicians, including Antonio Vega , the band Celtas Cortos , Luz Casal and Miguel Ríos . In 2014, the album Han llovido 15 años was released in memory of him . On April 28, 2010, the Madrid City Council decided to name a street in the Vicálvaro district after him.
