Enrique Zañartu Prieto (born December 25, 1881 in Santiago de Chile , † February 8, 1943 ibid) was a Chilean politician .

Life

Enrique Zañartu Prieto, son of the politician Manuel Zañartu Zañartu and nephew of the politician Aníbal Zañartu , completed after visiting the Instituto Nacional, Literario, Económico, Civil y eclesiástico del Estado de Chile and the Liceo de aplicación a degree in law at the Universidad de Chile . In the National Congress (Congreso Nacional) he was initially a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados) for the Partido Liberal Democrático between 1906 and 1918 . During the tenure of Ramón Barros Luco , who held the office of President from 1910 to 1915 , he was Minister for Industry, Public Works and Railways from 1911 to 1912 and again from 1913 to 1914 (Ministro de Industria, Obras Públicas y Ferrocarriles) .

In the subsequent government of Juan Luis Sanfuentes , who was president from 1915 to 1920, Zañartu Prieto served as Minister of the Interior (Ministro del Interior) between 1916 and 1917 . He was a member of the Senate (Senado) between 1918 and 1932 . In the first government of President Arturo Alessandri Palma , he was Minister of Finance (Ministro de Hacienda) for the first time between July 20 and September 5, 1924 . From June 16 to August 16, 1932, he also held the post of finance minister in the government of President Carlos Dávila Espinoza . In the presidential election of October 30, 1932, he finally ran himself for the office of President. After Arturo Alessandri from the Partido Liberal (187,914 votes, 54.79 percent), Marmaduke Grove Vallejo from the Nueva Acción Pública (60,856 votes, 17.74 percent) and Héctor Rodríguez de la Sotta from the Partido Conservado (47,207 votes, 13.76 percent) with 42,885 votes (12.50 percent), however, only fourth place, while Elías Lafertte Gaviño of Partido Comunista de Chile was beaten fifth with 4,128 votes (1.2 percent).
