Aníbal Zañartu Zañartu (* 1847 in Concepción , † February 1, 1902 in Tomé ) was a Chilean politician who was acting president in 1901 .

Life

Aníbal Zañartu Zañartu graduated after attending the Liceo de Concepción to study law at the Universidad de Chile and was then as a lawyer working. He served from 1881 to 1882 as chargé (charge d'affaires) of the embassy in Ecuador . In the National Congress (Congreso Nacional) he was after his return for the Partido Liberal, initially between 1882 and 1888 a member of the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados) and in 1885 President of the Chamber of Deputies. He was then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister for Colonization (Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores y Colonización) from 1885 to 1886 in the government of Domingo Santa María González , who was President from 1881 to 1886. In the subsequent government of Jose Manuel Balmaceda , who was 1886-1891 president, he held from 1887 to 1888 for the first time as interior minister (Ministro del Interior) . Between 1888 and his death in 1902 he was a member of the Senate (Senado) .

In the government of President Federico Errázuriz Echaurren , who ruled from 1896 to 1901 , Zañartu was again Minister of the Interior in 1896 and 1901. In 1901 he was also Vice President (Vice President) . When Federico Errázuriz Echaurren died of a heart attack on July 12, 1901, Aníbal Zañartu took over the provisional office of President , which he handed over to the elected successor Germán Riesco Errázuriz on September 18, 1901 .

His brother was the politician Manuel Zañartu Zañartu , who was MP and Minister of Finance, while his nephew Enrique Zañartu Prieto was also MP, Senator and minister on several occasions.
