Ensus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ensus Ltd. is a UK company based in Yarm , North Yorkshire . It deals with the use of renewable raw materials from agriculture for the production of biofuels , fertilizers, feed and food.

Since 2009, Ensus has been operating one of Europe's largest bioethanol refineries in Wilton ( Teesside , Yorkshire) in northeast England (as of 2013). More than 400 million liters of ethanol are produced each year from over a million tons of feed wheat grown in the region. This corresponds to about a third of the annual amount required for the whole of Great Britain for the legally required minimum admixture of biofuels in vehicle fuels.

In addition, 350,000 tons of high protein animal feed raw materials ( DDGS ) are produced annually during production , which makes Ensus one of the largest producers of such feed ingredients in Europe.

In addition, 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide are produced each year , which are liquefied in a neighboring plant. One of the main buyers of the gas is the Norwegian fertilizer company Yara , which has invested around GBP 60 million in the construction of the refinery as part of a cooperation agreement. It is also distributed to carbonated beverage manufacturers, other food producers, and other industries.

The company gets the heat and electricity it needs from a power plant with combined heat and power.

In July 2013, Ensus was sold by its previous owner, the fund of the US private equity company Carlyle Group , to the German company CropEnergies , which is majority owned by Südzucker Group . In return, Carlyle became a CropEnergies shareholder through a capital increase. CropEnergies thus gained access to the British market and increased its previous bioethanol production by 50 percent to over 1.2 million cubic meters. CropEnergies intends to invest 50 million GBP in the acquired plants.
